2
Noble Gas Configuration
shorthand notation for electron configurations
consists of the elemental symbol of the last noble gas prior to that atom, followed by the configuration of the remaining electrons.
3
Examples:
Noble Gas Configuration for Boron is :[He] 2s2 2p1
Noble Gas Configuration for Oxygen is: [He] 2s² 2p⁴
4
Take a guess
What is the element represented by [Ne]3s23p2?
5
Take a guess
What element has this electron configuration [Ar]3d74s2?
6
Ionization Energy
is the energy required to remove an electron from a specific atom
Moving from left to right across the periodic table, the ionization energy for an atom increases
Within a group, the ionization energy decreases as the size of the atom gets larger

8
Big Atoms
The larger an atom is, the more reactive it will be.
9
Reactivity of Elements
Period - reactivity decreases as you go from left to right. Period - reactivity increases as you go from the left to the right. Group - reactivity decreases as you go down the group.
