Introduction to Colour Styling

Harmony has a great concept of color palettes. Each character can have its own set of colors that is carried through the entire project called the master palette. If the master is modified, the colors in the entire project are updated simultaneously.

6

Hue

The pure color, when it is not affected by black or white.

7

Value

the amount of black or white that is added to the hue

8

Chroma

the brightness of the color, or rather, how saturated or desaturated it is

9

Multiple Choice

Chroma refers to...

1

the amount of black or white

2

the pure color

3

how saturated the color is

10

Standard Color Wheel

At a very young age, we are
taught that this wheel starts with
primary colors: yellow, blue and
red.

When mixing primaries, you get secondary colors. Yellow and red will give you orange, yellow and blue will give you green and finally, blue and red will give you purple. The following illustration shows the standard color wheel on the left and its primary and secondary colors.

Multiple Choice

According to the standard color wheel, green results from adding...

1

blue and yellow

2

blue and orange

3

red and orange

YURMBY Color Wheel

It is based on a set of six
primary colors: yellow, red,
magenta, blue, cyan and
green. These 6 colors cover
a very wide range and also
allows for even representation of all colors on the spectrum.

Monochromatic Color Scheme

when you use a single hue for all of your illustration. You can create contrast by simply taking that colour through variations of values or chroma

media

14

Multiple Choice

With a monochromatic colour scheme, the only elements you would adjust are value and hue

1

true

2

false

15

Complementary Color Scheme

  • Colors are complementary to each other when they are at opposite sides on the color wheel

  • creates a strong, shocking contrast

media

16

Multiple Choice

A complementary color scheme creates what?

1

fun colors

2

contrast

3

unity

17

Analogous Colour Scheme

  • when three colors are one next to the other on the color wheel

  • harmonious color palette

media

18

Multiple Choice

The analogous color scheme uses colors opposite each other on the color wheel

1

true

2

false

19

Triadic Colour Scheme

  • uses three colors equally spaced around the color wheel

  • seems to offer to perfect balance between contrast and colour harmony

media

20

Multiple Choice

The triadic color scheme creates what results in terms of color contrast and harmony?

1

low contrast

2

a monochromatic effect balance

3

balance

21

Split Complementary Color Scheme

  • a mix of complementary and analogous colors

  • it allows for both a strong contrast and one very solid color harmony between the two analogous colors

media

22

Multiple Choice

The split-complementary color scheme is a combination of which two other color schemes?

1

complementary & triadic

2

analogous & monochromatic

3

complementary & analogous

23

Tetradic Color Scheme

  • two sets of complementary colors

  • a tricky color scheme to pull of, but when you do, the results are vibrant and contrasted while having some harmonies

media

24

Warm and Cool Color Scheme

  • Warm colors often suggest energy, fire, and sunshine.

  • Cool colors on the other end will be more about stillness, winter,

  • nighttime, or darkness.
