Pay attention to the Denominator

• If the denominator is the same, just add or subtract the top numbers

• If the denominator is different, find the common denominator

Example

 $\frac{2}{8}\ +\ \frac{4}{8}$  

=  $\frac{2\ +\ 4}{8}$  

=  $\frac{6}{8}$  

Example 2

 $\frac{4}{8}$  -  $\frac{2}{8}$  =

= $\frac{4\ -\ 2}{8}$  

=  $\frac{2}{8}$
