Act 2 Scene 2

KEY TERMINOLOGY - SOLILOQUY: When a character speaks on stage and none of the other cast can hear them.

In yesterday's lesson we started the balcony scene. Romeo had climbed into the Capulet's garden and was declaring his love to Juliet out of sight from her through a soliloquy.

Juliet then spoke in a soliloquy in a brave and confident manner asking Romeo to give up his Montague name.

7

What happened next?

Juliet and Romeo finally begin talking after Romeo reveals himself and Juliet is petrified that he will be seen:

"The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, And the place death, considering who thou art, If any of my kinsmen find thee here"

Poll

Question image

THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER!

Consider the verb choice "dare" - does Romeo love Juliet or does is he excited about the idea of competing for an enemies daughter?

"And what love can do that dares love attempt"

He loves her, he's a hopeless romantic.

He just sees it as competition.

It is lust and not love.

11

Poll

Now consider the following quotes, who is the more mature, more rational and less emotive, more sensible and more aware of the consequences?

Romeo: "With love's light wings did I o'er-perch these walls; For stony limits cannot hold love out,And what love can do that dares love attempt"

Juliet: "If they do see thee, they will murder thee"

Romeo

Juliet

12

Now consider if you think Romeo loves Juliet truly.

JULIET: gentle Romeo,If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully

ROMEO: Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops--

JULIETO, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon, That monthly changes in her circled orb,Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.

ROMEOWhat shall I swear by?

JULIET Do not swear at all [...]

ROMEOIf my heart's dear love--

JULIETWell, do not swear: although I joy in thee,

13

Is Romeo more intereseted in Love or Lust?

ROMEO: O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?

Romeo's direct question aims to persuade/manipulate Juliet into a physical relationship.

JULIET: What satisfaction canst thou have to-night?

Juliet's rhetorical question demonstrates her assured confidence - she will not be manipulated and persuaded.

14

Fill in the Blank

What does Romeo then suggest that they do so that he can prove his love for Juliet?

"The exchange of thy love's faithful vow for mine"

15

What will happen next?

Hence will I to my ghostly father's cell, His help to crave, and my dear hap to tell.

Romeo says that he will go straight to the Priests to ask for his help - what do you think is significant about the adjective he uses to describe the priest?
