Iceberg Analysis
Surface-level: What is convincing? What is her evidence? What rhetorical strategy is it?
Below the surface: How does this prove her larger point?
Deep analysis: Why is this important to the text? Why is this important to the world?
9
Example:
Quote: “I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists.”
Surface: This is establishing personal character. It is convincing because it shows how deeply she cares about the issue.
10
How does this prove her main point?
Below the surface: This proves her main point that everyone deserves education, regardless of background or ancestry. There shouldn't be any limits on who gets an education.
11
Why is this important to the text/world?
Deep analysis: Malala shows that education will lead to a society that cares about others and puts the needs of others ahead of their own. She is living proof of education causing compassion.
