2

WHEREAS AND WHILE

We use a clause with Whereas or While to express a contrast or comparison:

* Most older people still watch TV whereas younger people choose YouTube videos.

* One of us wants to stay at home on weekends while the others like to go out.

We can also use whereas and while to mean although or in spite of the fact that.

While I don´t really like spinach, I eat it sometimes.

3

BE CAREFUL!!!

Be careful not to confuse the 2 meanings of while.

While I was watching TV, my phone rang. = when

While I sometimes turn on the TV to relax, I usually read instead. =whereas

4

UNLIKE

We can also use unlike to express a comparison ex.

* Unlike all the people I know, I hate shopping.

* She´s friendly, unlike her sister.

* His boss allows him to work from home, unlike mine.

5

EXPRESSING A REASON

SINCE AND AS = BECAUSE

We use since and as to express a reason. They mean because.

* Since I only read e-book, I´ve thrown out many of my paper books.

*I´m going to forget about my friend Dave as he never calls me.

Since and As are the formal equivalent of so:

*As it´s raining, we´ll have to stay at home = It was raining, so we had to stay at home.

*Since it´s too late, I think we should stop now = It´s too late, so I think we should stop

*Usually at the beginning

6

DUE TO, BECAUSE OF, AS A RESULT OF

Use DUE TO, BECAUSE OF, AS A RESULT OF to express a reason. They are frequently followed by a noun.

* DUE TO, BECAUSE OF, AS A RESULT OF illness, we had to cancel the concert.

We cancel the concert DUE TO, BECAUSE OF, AS A RESULT OF lack of interest

7

DUE TO THE FACT THAT...+ CLAUSE

We can use due to the fact that + a clause = more formal than because or since

*The library closed due to the fact that It had no money

We can also express a reason with therefore and as a result. Therefore is a little bit more formal than so.

This show is very popular. Therefore / As a result, other similar shows have been produced.

* We start a new sentence with therefore. We don´t use comma before it.

The heating system has broken down, therefore, we have closed the school. NOT CORRECT :(
