Graphic Organizers
Graphic organizers are useful tools that help readers better understand what they have read. They are diagrams, charts, and outlines that use shapes (graphics) to sort (organize) information.
6
Multiple Choice
What are graphic organizers?
How you organize all your graphic novels.
Diagrams, charts and outlines that use shapes to organize information.
People who are really, really into organizing.

Web Diagrams
Web diagrams organize main ideas and supporting details. The main idea is usually found at the top or at the center of the diagram. The supporting details are usually found in shapes below or around the main idea. The diagram looks like a web because the main idea has lines or arrows between it and the supporting details. Read the passage below, look at the web diagram, and answer the question that follows.

"Ferrari World Park"
Ferrari is building a theme park called Ferrari World. The park will be located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. There will be 20 rides, games, and shows. One of the roller coasters is going to be the fastest in the world. It will reach a speed of up to 125 miles per hour. This super-fast coaster is meant to make passengers feel as if they are driving a Ferrari F1 racecar. Another exciting ride will be the GT roller coaster. It will also offer a racing experience. The cars in the GT coaster will look like the Ferrari model F430 Spider. Two of these coaster cars will race each other on tracks that are side by side. The park is going to be indoors. Even the roof of the enormous building is designed to copy the curves of the Ferrari GT. The park is set to open later in 2010.

Venn Diagrams
Venn diagrams organize the similarities and differences between two things. In the Venn diagram below, the yellow and blue parts show how the Thai hot and the ghost chili peppers are different from each other. The green part shows how the peppers are alike. Read the passage below, look at the Venn diagram, and answer the question that follows.
11
"Hot Peppers"
Peppers are known for their flavor and their heat. One of the world's hottest peppers is the Thai hot. Thai hot peppers are grown in several Asian countries. These peppers are usually red. They are small, flat, and pointed. People use Thai hot peppers in cooking. The peppers are popular in spicy sauces. They are even used as medicine. People believe they help with upset stomachs, sore teeth, and joint pain. The Scoville system measures the hotness of different kinds of peppers. Thai hot peppers receive a Scoville score from 50,000 to 100,000. Jalapeno peppers score between only 2,500 to 5,000.
12
"Hot Peppers" Continued
Ghost chilies are known as the world's hottest pepper. They are mostly found in northeast India. These peppers are orange to red in color. They are rounded and have wrinkled skin. They are larger than Thai hot peppers. Like the Thai hot pepper, ghost chilies are used in cooking sauces and as medicine. They are commonly eaten to help settle upset stomachs. They are also eaten to help people cool off in hot weather. Unlike Thai hot peppers, ghost chilies have a Scoville score of over a million. Eating even the smallest bit of a ghost chili will make a person's eyes water and nose run.

"Wimmy's Walk"
Arlo took his pet Wimmy on the usual walk to the park. On the way back, Arlo stopped to talk to his neighbor. While Arlo was talking, Wimmy grew impatient. She chewed through the leash and started running back to the park.
"Wimmy, come back!" Arlo yelled. Wimmy ran faster because she did not want to stand still any longer. Arlo chased after Wimmy, but he could not catch her. Then, he remembered that he had something in his pocket. Arlo stopped and held out a treat for Wimmy. "Come here, Wimmy. I have a delicious treat for you," Arlo said sweetly.
18
"Wimmy's Walk" Continued
Wimmy smelled the salty scent of cheese. She loved cheese. The plump, white rat turned around and scampered to Arlo. He carefully picked Wimmy up and fed her the cheese.
"You're a good girl. Let's go home," Arlo lovingly said. He carried Wimmy in his arms like a baby the rest of the way home. She was a bit tired from all of her running, so she fell asleep in her owner's arms.
