"A tariff is a tax imposed by a government of a country on imports or exports of goods. Besides being a source of revenue for the government, import duties can also be a form of regulation of foreign trade and policy that taxes foreign products to encourage or safeguard domestic industry."

Tariff of 1828: angered many in the South, especially John C. Calhoun, since the South imported most of its manufactured goods from Britain and France
Tariff of 1832: lowered the tariff on foreign goods, but South Carolina had had enough and Nullified the tariff

Congress passed the Force Bill, which would give Jackson the power to send in the military to collect the tariff tax by force
