Lets Focus on Ten Communication Principles that Work

5

1. Communicate The Truth

When you’re wrong, say so. When you make a mistake, step up to the plate. When you miss a deadline, own up. When you make a lousy decision, don’t hide behind anyone. When the outcome is disappointing, say so.

6

Open Ended

Why do you think it is important to be honest when engaging with customers?

7

2. Explain Your Reasoning Behind Decisions

People may not agree with your decisions and actions, but at least they’ll be glad to know what they are. What are the facts? What were the criteria in making the decision? What are the next steps? Without the details, people rarely buy into the vision for the long haul.

8

3. Don’t Hide Behind Technology

What takes 10 e-mails to negotiate or clarify can often be communicated in a three-minute phone conversation or a walk across the building.

9

4. Frame Negative News Positively When You Can Do So Honestly

Never leave someone or a group of people feeling like the ‘glass is half-empty’. Where possible, communicate the upside or opportunity, leaving people with the ‘glass half-full’.

11

Open Ended

What does 'glass half-empty' and 'glass half-full' mean? Why is it important to think in a 'glass half-full' way?

12

5. Keep It Jargon-Free

When it’s all said and done, people prefer that you tell them in plain English.

6. Communicate Like You Brush Your Teeth

Make it a habit. Do it frequently, habitually, systematically. Get a system, structure or timetable that works for you. Include both formal and informal communication in your approach.

16

6. Show Your Humanity – Keep It Real (Be Genuine)

Stop trying to project a 10 out of 10 persona. When you communicate with colleagues, never fear to let them see your humanity.

17

8. Listen Like You Care

Acknowledge that you hear what others communicate to you – both verbally and non-verbally. Rather than interrupting or telling your own story, communicate concern through your words and your body language – good eye contact, appropriate facial expression, focused posture.

18

19

9. Stay Open-Minded

Everyone has different opinions on the truth. You may currently believe something, but with new information, you should be prepared to change your mind.

20

Open Ended

What does open-minded mean?

10. Adapt Your Style To The Person

In order to adapt and connect with people, ‘turn up’ the behaviours of the other person and ‘turn down’ your own natural tendencies.
