Similes and Metaphors

Similes and metaphors are used in writing to compare and contrast. This means they tell how things are the same or different. They make you think of pictures in your mind.

6

Multiple Choice

How do similes and metaphors make us form pictures in our minds?

1

By directly telling us what to picture

2

By being very vague about the details in the story.

3

By making us smile

4

By using compare and contrast.

7

Simile

simile compares two things. It uses AS or LIKE in its comparison.

8

Examples

This class is AS wild AS a circus.

The student stood tall and proud LIKE a statue.

Which two words do similes use?

1

Either and or

2

Neither and nor

3

As and like

Metaphors

metaphor also compares two things, but it does it by saying that one thing IS another thing. It does not use the words "as" or "like."

11

Examples

His finger WAS a hook.

Her heart IS a brick wall.

4

Being being extra vague in the story.

13

We cannot tell the difference.
