Earth and Moon

The Earth, Moon, and planets are always on the move in space. Let's review what some of those movements are called.

Earth, the Moon, and the planets spin on their axis. What is that motion called?

4

Rotation

The rotation of Earth takes 24 hours to spin all the way around on its axis and causes day and night.

7

Revolutions and orbits

When a planet makes an orbit it travels around the sun. Earth takes 365 days to complete its revolution and we experience the seasons as our planet revolves.

8

Earth's Tilt

Earth has a 23.5° tilt on its axis. Due to the Earth's tilt, our hemisphere sometimes points towards the sun and sometimes away from the sun as the Earth revolves. As a result each hemisphere is heated differently at different times of the year

9

The Moon's revolution

The moon does not make its own light, so we can only see the side that reflects sunlight. As the Moon makes its revolution, we can only see the part that is illuminated (lit up) and in a spot where we can see it.

10

Moon Phases or Lunar Cycle

As the Moon makes its revolution, we see the lit up side from different angles. The waxing part of the phase is illuminated on the right and waning phase on the left. Let's identify some of those phases in the lunar cycle.

Eclipses

An eclipse happens when one body in space blocks another. As the Moon changes position, the Sun, Earth and moon sometimes line up, causing the eclipse to occur.

Tides

The Earth experiences high tides and low tides daily. The highest tide is on the side closest to the moon and on the side opposite the moon. Earth also experiences spring and neap tides throughout the month as the position of the moon changes.

Solar System

Our solar system is a collection of planets, their moons, and other objects all held together by the Sun's gravity.

The Universe

The universe is made of many galaxies, each with many solar systems. Our solar system is in a galaxy called the Milky Way galaxy.
