How did using the testing strategies (prereading/looking at questions, answering questions before looking at choices, summarizing text, etc...) help you in choosing your answers?
3

I aced it!
I think I did okay, but I'm glad we're going over this.
I didn't really get it.
What are we talking about?

Multiple Choice
Part 2 B: Select the sentence that BEST supports the answer to Part 1A.
"I said to myself: 'Look out, old ferret! They have something in store for you" (paragraph 4).
"They must have planned some good joke. Assurely I am to be the victim of some joke" (paragraph 5)
" I scented a practical joke in the air, as a dog scents game. But what was it?" (paragraph 6).
"Everything seemed quiet in the château" (paragraph 12).
6
Exemplar by Marsha Joseph
The word omniscience means all-knowing which the narrator did not show as he was unsure what joke his friends will have: "I scented a practical joke in the air, as a dog scents game. But what was it?" (p.6).
So, does this "limited understanding" produce irony or suspense? We do feel suspense, but nothing happens. Suspense can't be it.
The ending of the story gives a result that is unexpected, creating irony: "The precautions I had taken in closing the shutters in and going to sleep in the middle of the room had only brought about the practical joke I had been trying to avoid (16).

Multiple Choice
Part 3A (RL.1.3): Which sentence best describes the narrator's actions that advance the plot?
He pretends that nothing is wrong.
He shares that he is fond of practical jokes.
He goes to bed later than the other guests.
He guards against a practical joke.

Multiple Choice
Part 4B: Which sentence from the story BEST supports the answer in Part 4A?
"I do not care to know people who are not" (paragraph 2).
"And I did not want to be caught" (paragraph 11).
"I dragged all these objects into the very middle of the room, facing the entrance door" (paragraph 11).
"Then I extinguished all the candles, and, groping my way, I slipped under the bedclothes" (paragraph 11).
9
Justification Exemplar by Jonathan Monroy
Lines 15-17 reveal: "[The narrator] . . . made up his mind to go to bed." [He then thought] "The bed was particularly suspicious-looking. I pulled at the curtains. They seemed to be secure. All the same, there was danger."
"These lines give us an example of how paranoid he is of getting pranked. He is suspicious of everything, which helps advance the plot.

Multiple Choice
Part 5A (RL.2.4): In paragraph 6, what is the impact of the phrase, "an object of suspicion" on the tone of the story?
It helps create a hopeless tone.
It helps to create a cynical tone.
It helps to create a frightening tone.
It helps create a jovial tone.

Multiple Choice
Part 6B: Which detail has a similar impact on tone as the phrase "an object of suspicion"?
" . . . the whole household came to escort me to my room" (paragraph 7).
"The shutters, large wooden shutters, were open"
(paragraph 10).
"If they were spying on me, as I supposed, they must . . . " (paragraph 11).
"So, I made up my mind to go to bed" (paragraph 11).
12
Justification Exemplar by Brian Stein
After the phase "an object of suspicion", he looks at his friends "distrustfully" and believes his friends are planning a practical joke (Paragraph 6). This adds to the cynical tone as he makes the reader believe that everyone is out to get him.
13
Multiple Choice
Part 7A (RL.1.2): Which sentence states a theme the author develops over the course of the story?
Acting on one's fears can cause them to come true.
Old friends can quickly turn into new enemies.
One's first instincts should always be trusted.
The unexpected should always be expected.
14
Multiple Choice
Part 8B: Which detail BEST helps to refine the theme the author develops over the course of the story?
"I thought, 'Here are people who have more than their share of amusement, and apparently without reason'" (paragraph 5).
"I was going perhaps to receive a cold shower-bath from overhead, or perhaps, the moment I stretched myself out, to find myself sinking to the floor with my mattress" (paragraph 11).
"For at least another hour I remained awake, starting at the slightest sound" (paragraph 12).
"The precautions I had taken in closing the shutters and going to sleep in the middle of the room had only brought about the practical joke I had been trying to avoid" (paragraph 16).
15
Justification Exemplar by Emily Garces
Since he did not have a clue on what his friends were going to do he had to keep himself safe but ended up being the one to turn the joke on himself. The author shows this in paragraph 16, "The precautions I had taken in closing the shutters and going to sleep in the middle of the room had only brought about the practical joke I had been trying to avoid."
16
Poll
If you were in the narrator's place, would you have suspected your friends to pull a practical joke on you?
