Let's Review
Texas had become increasingly urbanized during the early 1900's. The Texas economy had grown during World War I. After the war, there was a period of economic trouble. The U.S. had enjoyed the boom times of the 1920's but there would be hard times in the 1930's. The Great Depression would cause business failures and massive unemployment.

The New Deal
In order to fight the depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and congress passed the "New Deal". Roosevelt believed that if workers had money to spend, they would spend it and the economy would improve.

WPA (Works Progress Administration)
One of the programs passed was the Works Progress Administration. This program provided work for families that had no income coming in. Workers built schools, dams, parks, and roads.

Social Security
Social Security is another program that provided payments to retired, older citizens and benefits for unemployed workers. The social security system collected the money it needed for payments from employers and from workers.

Rural Electrification Administration
This program helped Texas farms gain access to electricity. Fewer than 10% of Texas farms had electricity because it was so expensive at the time. This program was very important in helping farmers.

National Youth Association
The National Youth Administration (NYA), was a program that employed young people between the ages of 16 and 25.
