Passage 1
Recycling is more than placing newspapers, glass, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles into recycling bins. Much of the recycling process takes place after the bins are collected. This is where natural resources and energy are saved. It is more energy efficient to make a product from recycled material than it is to make a product from natural resources. For example, making a ton of paper from recycled paper saves 17 trees and uses 50 percent less water. Unfortunately, the United States currently recycles only 32.5 percent of its waste. Still, the environmental Protection Agency estimates that these efforts are the equivalent of removing 39.9 million cars from the road.
What is the main idea of the passage above?
The people of United States needs to recycle more.
Recycling is a waste of time since it only saves a few trees.
It is important to recycle.
The real work involved in recycling happens after bins are collected.

Passage 2
To the President of ABC Airlines:
I am a seventh-grade student concerned about our environment. I am asking that you review our company's policy on recycling. Airlines generate 425, 000 tons of waste per year. Yet less than 20% of that trash is recycled. I believe much of that waste is plastic. Airlines also have magazines and paper waste. Passengers use plastic plates, plastic utensils, and plastic glasses. Right now, the United States recylces one third of its waste, and 13% of water bottles are recycled nationwide. If airlines recycled plastic bottles and other plastic materials, the amount of recycled plastic would greatly increase. So please, review your company's recycling policy and make the necessary changed to help our environment.
What is the author's purpose for writing this passage?
To inform the airline of how much waste it produces.
To persuade the airline to allow her student group to start a recycling system.
To persuade Airlines to recyle the tons of waste it has each year.
To persuade the airline to allow her class to take a flight to learn about the different items they can recycle after a flight.

The second passage addresses all kinds of plastic waste yet gives a statistic for recycling plastic water botles.
Both authors share the stastic that the United States recyles roughly 33 percent of its total waste.
Both authors base their writing on personal opinions and biases which makes them unreliable sources.
12
Multiple Select
When comparing both text, which of the following statements are true?
Check all that apply.
Both passages focus on the same topic-recycling.
It is obvious that both passeses were written by indivduals who support recycling.
The purpose of Passge 1 is to explain that recycling takes place after waste is put into bins. Passage 2 claims that amounts of recycled plastic would increase if airlines recylced plastic bottles and other materials.
