Going to War

Germany was damaged by World War I. It was also forced to pay a large amount of money to other countries because of the war. This image shows German tractors going to France as part of a payment for war damages. Payment for war damages caused an economic crisis in Germany.

Another War

Most of the other countries in Europe also struggled with economic crisis. New leaders rose in Italy, Russia, and Germany. They believed that the government should control everything in a country. Adolf Hitler became the dictator of Germany. He wanted to make the nation strong by taking over and ruling other countries.

Another War

Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Then Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. Soon, other European countries formed alliances with one side or the other. This was the beginning of World War II.

6

Allied Versus Axis Powers

The two sides of this war were called the Allies and the Axis Powers. The Allies included close to 50 countries. These are the major countries that were involved on each side.

7

The Attack

The United States didn't fight in World War II right away. It was still suffering from the Great Depression. Most of the American people didn't want to join the war. The government chose to help the Allies. It sent them weapons and resources. But then in 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This made most Americans change their minds. The United States officially joined World War II.

The United States in World War II

Equipment

The United States produced and supplied half of the military equipment to the Allied forces in Europe. This included planes, tanks, guns, and trucks. They also sent equipment to China who was fighting Japan.

Atlantic Charter

The United States and Britain wrote the Atlantic Charter. This document set goals for the war and the postwar years.

Soldiers

Sixteen million American men and women served in the war. They served in all areas: on the ground, in the sky, and on the water.

16

The United States' Role

Homefront

At home, people rationed their food. This means they limited how much each person got. They planted victory gardens to increase food production at home. They had blackouts, turning off their lights at night, to prevent the enemy from targeting towns and cities.

Europe and Asia

The U.S. fought with the Allied forces against the Germans in Europe. It fought against Japan in Asia.

17

World War II at Home

World War II had a great impact on people's lives in the United States. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was startling. Over 2,400 Americans were killed in the attack. Many people began to worry that they could be attacked.

World War II at home

Fears led to prejudice against German and Japanese Americans. Schools had air raid drills. These drills were practice for what to do if they came under attack. Cities on the West Coast had blackouts at night. They thought this would make it difficult for enemy planes and ships to attack them.

19

World War II at Home

The war also increased patriotism in the United States. Patriotism is the feeling of support that people have for their nation. What other ways did World War II impact people's lives in the United States?

Economy

World War II brought the United States out of the Great Depression. The government needed resources and goods for the war. Factories used mass production to make guns, ammunition, and ships quickly. Factories and steel mills ran all day long to meet needs. The economy began to grow stronger. Many men went to fight in the war. Women worked in the factories and mills. Farmers also worked to grow more food that could be sent to feed soldiers.

Slide image

21

Military

There were military bases all over the United States that trained soldiers, pilots, and medical staff. Women were also trained to serve in special divisions. Some were nurses in combat areas, while others trained to pilot planes for special needs. Most states had prisoner-of-war, or POW, camps. These camps housed Axis soldiers who were taken prisoner during the war.

Slide image

22

Rationing

The United States government encouraged citizens to conserve resources. People wanted to support their nation. They collected scrap metal for factories to make weapons. The government also limited the amount of goods, like gasoline and rubber, people could buy. It gave people ration books. These books had stamps that people had to give businesses when they bought goods like sugar, meat, and canned goods. If they didn't have any stamps, they couldn’t buy anything.

Slide image

23

Japanese Relocation

Fears about further attack in the United States led to worries about German, Italian, and Japanese Americans. People were concerned that they were still loyal to their home countries and not the United States. However, the government decided to relocate Japanese Americans. They also relocated some German and Italian Americans. However, Japanese Americans were the largest group affected by relocating.

Slide image

24

Japanese Relocation

The government forced them to live in special camps in the United States during the war, like the one pictured. Japanese American families had to sell their homes, businesses, and most of what they owned. The government then allowed them to return home after the war.

Summary
