I am learning to use what I know about properties of multiplication and place value to multiply numbers by 13.

Success Criteria

I can use the distributive property to multiply numbers within 15 by 13.

How do I multiply by 13?

• To multiply by 13 use the distributive property.

• Think of 10 groups and 3 more groups.

• For a fact like 13 × 7, you can start with 10 × 7 to make 70, then add three groups of 7 (21). 70 + 21 = 91

• For a fact like 13 x 14, you can start with 10 x 14 to make 140, then add three groups of 14 (42). 140 + 42 = 182

What is the trick?

• Put a 0 in front of the number being multiplied by 13.

• Multiply each number by 3 and

  add on the digit to the right.
