Comparación de Igualdad
Capítulo 2 - ¡Cuídate bien!

Comparisons of Equality
There are two kinds of comparisons in Spanish:
(1) Comparisons of inequality and (2) Comparisons of equality.
Like their names suggest, comparisons of inequality compare two things where one is less than or more than of a certain quality than the other. Comparisons of equality compare two things that are equal.
3
Comparisons of Equality
In order to compare two things equally you use one of the following formulas:
(1) tanto(a)(os)(as) _______ como
(2) tan ______ como
THEY ALWAYS END IN <<COMO>>.
4
Comparisons of Equality
You use <<tanto...como>> to compare QUANTITIES - meaning that someone HAS just as much of something (a noun) as someone else. This can also be used in negative to say that someone DOESN'T HAVE as much of something as someone else.
Elena has as much energy as I do.
But she doesn't have as many accidents as I do.
tanto = as much/as many como = as
5
Comparisons of Equality
Because tanto is an adjective (word that describes another word), it has to agree with the noun it modifies (gender and number). Depending on the noun it is describing, tanto could be:
tanto
tanta
tantos
tantas
6
Comparisons of Equality
Because tanto is an adjective (word that describes another word), it has to agree with the noun it modifies (gender and number).
Elena tiene tanta energía como yo.
Pero ella no tiene tantos accidentes como yo.
7
Comparisons of Equality
You use <<tan...como>> to compare QUALITIES (adjectives/adverbs) - someone IS as something as someone else.
He is as sick as his friend is.
He runs as fast as his friend does.
Él está tan enfermo como su amiga.
Él corre tan rápido como su amigo.
8
Some hints and tricks
Your BEST bet is to look at the word in the middle of the comparison and figure out if it is a THING (a noun) or a DESCRIPTION (adjective or adverb). From there, you can easily figure out if you need tanto or tan in front of the comparison. If it is tanto, you have to change the ending to match the noun.
(1) ... tanto(a)(os)(as) NOUNS como ....
these will sometimes have the verb TENER in front to talk about what someone or something HAS. This is not 100% of the time so make sure to look at the word in the middle of the comparison to be sure.
(2) tan ______ como
these will usually have SER and ESTAR in front to talk about what someone IS. Again, this is not a fool proof method.
9
Comparisons of Equality
The third type of comparison of equality involves VERBS.
__(VERB)__ tanto como
He runs as much as I do. Él corre tanto como yo.
These sentences express that someone DOES AN ACTION as much as someone else does. Unlike the other two formulas where the noun/adjective are in the middle of the comparison, the verbs are IN FRONT of the tanto. No matter who you are talking about in these, the tanto never changes. Notice how the comparison has subjects (people) on either end.
