Background
American Revolution her Tadeusz Kosciuszko might not have been in the colonies at all were it not for some bad luck in love. As a tutor in Poland, Kosciuszko had attempted to marry his employer’s daughter, which enraged his employer, a general. After fleeing the general, Kosciuszko went to American, where his military training helped him rise quickly through the ranks of the Continental Army. Throughout the war, he planned critical fortifications, which earned him American citizenship. Later he returned to Poland and led a rebellion against Russian occupation that failed after he was taken, prisoner. After his release, Kosciuszko returned briefly to the United States, where he was received warmly by the people and began a long friendship with Thomas Jefferson.
