Trade waste

What is trade waste? Trade waste is industrial or commercial wastewater that contains substances from manufacturing processes. Although treated trade waste is discharged into sewerage systems, it is different to normal domestic sewerage and stormwater.

Trade waste is wastewater from businesses such as food and chemical manufacturers, agriculture, service stations, and restaurants. If not controlled, trade waste can be harmful to the wastewater network, the treatment system, the environment, drainlayers, and the public

Trade waste G14

G14 is the acceptable solutions developed by MBI (Ministry of business and Innovation.G14 sets out the minimum requirements of what must be done to comply with the code.

Trade Waste Classification

  • Prohibited The most dangerous type of trade wastes are those classed as prohibited. Prohibited trade wastes are dealt with in NZBC F3, Hazardous Substances and Processes.

Under no circumstances can prohibited trade wastes enter sewerage systems or stormwater outfalls.

5

Conditionally acceptable trade waste

  • Conditionally acceptable trade waste contains some levels of trade waste matter but without the characteristics of prohibited trade waste (for example, high toxicity or flammability).

6

Acceptable trade waste

  • Acceptable trade waste can enter the network utility system controlled by the territorial authority. Acceptable trade waste is usually wastewater resulting from washing or cleaning processes that do not involve toxic or hazardous cleaners and solvents.

Multiple Choice

Is trade waste allowed to enter the sewer.

1

Yes ,but not allowed to go into the stormwater

2

No it must be stored on site and disposed of in a landfill.

3

Only if you have permission by the territorial authority

4

If it is pretreated prior to entry and you have TA approval.

  • Silt traps (mud tanks).

    Neutralising traps

  • Oil and grit traps

  • Grease traps

Neutralising Traps

media

An acid neutralising tank is a trade waste tank used to normalise the pH level of waste water containing high levels of acid before the water is discharged into the sewerage system

11

Acid neutralising tanks are used in art or craft workshops;battery storage areas;

cheese manufacturers; dairies; Industries generating acidic waste water; metal etching workshops; photographic laboratories; school or university laboratories.

12

So how does it work?

  1. The tanks are filled with acid neutralising marble chips (sold separately) to 60% of the water capacity.

  2. Liquid and acidic waste flows through the tank to filter past the marble chips.

  3. This has the effect of neutralising the acid thus allowing pH balanced water to be safely discharged to the sewer.
