How to Factor an Expression

• Example: 5x + 35

• This expression has 2 terms: 5x & 35

• Ask yourself: "Is there a common factor (GCF) that 5 & 35 share?"

• 5: 1, 5

• 35: 1, 5, 7, 35

• The only common factor they share is 5

• 5(x + 7)

Try This One

• Example: 8y + 4

• 8: 1, 2, 4, 8

• 4: 1, 2, 4

• 4 is the largest factor they share
