2

When do we use the Present Progressive (PP) tense?

  • When we want to say what someone is is PRESENTLY doing.

  • An action that is IN PROGRESS.

  • This is why this verb tense is called the PRESENT PROGRESSIVE

3

What does the Present Progressive look like in English?

  • Mrs. Fishman and Mr. Bustamante are teaching Spanish (right now).

  • I am paying attention in Spanish class (right now).

  • It is raining outside (right now).

4

What are the parts of the Present Progressive? Let's look again at the sentences from the last slide:

  • Mrs. Fishman and Mr. Bustamante are teaching.

  • I am paying attention.

  • It is raining.

  • What do all 3 of these sentences have in common?

  • All 3 have a form of "to be" (am, is, are) and a participle (a word that ends in -ing)

5

How do I construct this tense in Spanish?

  • For the "am", "is" and "are" you will need to use a form of "estar" to agree with the subject of the sentence

  • Let's make sure we know the conjugations of "estar"!

9

How do I form the "-ing" part of the verb?

  • Take the infinitive

  • Drop the "-ar", "-er" or "-ir" from the end

  • Tack on "ando" (for -AR verbs)

  • Tack on "-iendo" (for -ER or -IR verbs)

  • Ex: talking = hablando

  • Ex: eating = comiendo

  • Ex: opening = abriendo

10

Let's put the 2 pieces together to form the present progressive!

  • I am talking = Yo estoy hablando

  • She is eating = Ella está comiendo

  • We are opening = Nosotros estamos abriendo

Of course- there are always exceptions to the rule!!

  • If the infinitive ends in either "-eer" or "-aer" instead of dropping the "-er'" OR "-ir" and adding "-iendo" you will add "-yendo" to avoid 3 vowels in a row

  • Ex: bringing = trayendo

  • Ex: reading = leyendo
