Naming Acids

Three Rules

3

4

If the anion ends in...
  • "ide" -use "hydro______ic acid"

  • "ate" -use "________ic acid"

  • "ite" -use "________ous acid"

5

If the anion is a single atom, it will always end in -ide.

6

...however, there are some polyatomic ions that end in -ide

7

Multiple Choice

What is the ending for the anion in this molecule: H2S

Naming Molecular/Covalent Compounds

As simple as knowing a few prefixes

18

19

The subscripts correlate to a prefix
  • 1- mono

  • 2- di

  • 3- tri

  • 4- tetra

  • 5- penta

20

The subscripts correlate to a prefix
  • 6- hexa

  • 7- hepta

  • 8- octa

  • 9- nona

  • 10- deca

Naming Ionic Compounds

Pretty easy until you have a transition metal as the cation

24

25

For non-transition metals, here are the rules:
  • The cation is called its name. Ex: Na+1 is "sodium"

  • If the anion is a single atom, use its name, minus the ending, replaced with "ide"

  • If the anion is a polyatomic ion, use the name on the polyatomic ion sheet

26

Fill in the Blanks

What is the name of K2O?

Type answer...

27

For transition metals (formula to name), here are the rules:
  • Find out the total charge for the anion side

  • Assume the cation side is the same magnitude (opposite charge)

  • Divide by subscript of cation (if different than one)

  • Whatever the charge is, put it as a Roman Numeral

28

Fill in the Blanks

What is the name of CuO? Don't forget the Roman Numeral!

Type answer...

29

30

For transition metals (name to formula), here are the rules:
  • Whatever the Roman Numeral is, put it as the charge.

  • Use the crossover method to get subscripts

31

Fill in the Blanks

What is the formula of Tin (IV) sulfide? Note: you will not be able to do a subscript, so just type the number and I will assume it is a subscript.
