Think about it...

This is part of a memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt, one of the past presidents of the United States. These words were taken from a speech he gave. The upper text says, "I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished." What was the President talking about?

Slide image

3

The Great Depression

When President Roosevelt spoke these words, he was speaking about the poverty millions of Americans were experiencing during the Great Depression. This was a period of economic hardship that started in the United States in 1929.

4

Causes of the Great Depression:

  • the stock market crash of 1929

  • overuse of installment plans

  • the Dust Bowl of the 1930s

5

Stock Market Crash

The stock market had been growing rapidly in the 1920s. People invested money by buying shares. They would keep their shares for a time, in hopes of selling them for more money than they paid for them. When the values of shares began to fall, people began trying to sell all their shares at once. This caused the market to crash. Many people lost their life savings.

Installment Plans

Before installment plans, people would save money to make a big purchase. The business would get the money for the good or service right away. Installment plans meant that businesses would receive payment a little at a time. This worked well when people could make the payments. Many families used installment plans to buy many items and built up debt. When they lost their jobs and money, they could not make payments.

Dust Bowl

The Great Plains region suffered greatly from the Dust Bowl. This severe drought caused crops to die. This region was a major supplier of wheat, which is important in many food items, like bread. Since farmers couldn't grow and sell crops, they lost their farms.

Once the crops died, there was nothing to hold the soil in place. Wind picked up the soil and caused dust storms.
