REMEMBER: Addition means "more than"

  • 6+2 means "two more than six".

  • the opposite of "more than" is "less than." So 6+(-2) means "two less than six"

5

Another way to look at it:

  • 6+2. If you have a number line, start at 6 and move 2 to the right(6,7,8).

  • 6+(-2) means start at 6 and go 2 to the left. (6,5,4).

6

The same rules apply if you start with a negative number.

  • -6+2 means start at -6. Go two to the right, you get (-6,-5,-4). So -6+2==4

  • -6+(-2) means start at -6. Go 2 to the left, you get (-6,-7,-8). So -6+(-2)=-8

What about subtraction? Let's start with 6-2

  • We can look at this as "How much more is six than two? six is four more than two. 6-2=4"

  • We can look at this as "2 less than 6". On a number line, start at 6. Go 2 backwards. 6-2=4

  • We can look at this as "add the opposite." 6-2 becomes 6+(-2).

12

What about 6-(-2)?

  • "How much more is 6 than -2? 6 is 8 more than -2. 6-(-2)=8

  • Normally, when we subtract, we go to the left. But if we subtract a negative, we go to the right.

  • "Add the opposite". 6-(-2) = 6+2=8

Multiplication and Division

  •  5×4=205\times4=20

     20÷4=520\div4=5

  • -5 x 4=(-5)+(-5)+(-5)+(-5) = -20

  • -5 x -4 = the opposite of -20, or 20

  •  20÷5=420\div-5=-4

  •  20÷5=the opposite of 4, or 4-20\div-5=the\ opposite\ of\ -4,\ or\ 4
