Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems
2
"An unmanned aircraft system is an unmanned aircraft and the equipment necessary for the safe and efficient operation of that aircraft. The aircraft that is operated without the possibility of direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft."
-FAA definition of UAS
3
UAS are as diverse in size and type as the terminology used to describe the system. Classification is important because it enables regulators to deal with the spectrum of systems in an appropriate way.
4
The most common way to classify UAS is by Gross Takeoff Weight (GTOW), which is focused solely on the weight of the aircraft component of the UAS. The FAA has not formally classified UAS. However, through a reading of FAA policy and regulations, the FAA has, de facto, created three classes of UAS including micro UAS, sUAS, and UAS.
5
Multiple Choice
What are the weight restrictions for a small UAS, including everything on board at the time of takeoff?
Less than 55 lbs.
less than 50 lbs.
6
Having knowledge without any experience does not qualify someone to fly a UAS. The Unmanned Safety Institute strongly recommends all remote pilots attend a UAS flight school or build their skills prior to commercially operating a UAS.
7
Multiple Choice
Why are professional and safe attitudes paramount in the training and flight of UAS operations?
Because many aspiring commercial remote pilots have an extensive manned aviation background but don't know anything about unmanned aviation.
Because many aspiring commercial remote pilots have either no aviation background or are transferred from the model aircraft community.
Because many aspiring commercial remote pilots have either no aviation background or are transferred from the military.
8
USI has created a body of knowledge and professional code of conduct in their effort to make a standard for professional remote pilots. Professionals engage in activities that are paid occupations and are expected to maintain qualifications and uphold standards.
9
Multiple Select
When you choose to operate your UAS for hire you potentially expose your organization to financial liability for: (Select all that apply)
Damage of Property
Injury of People
Disruption of Service
Invasion of Privacy

They must also work to build experience and knowledge in the system they operate. Putting best practices above profits and project timetables is vital to the culture of safety.
12
Multiple Choice
What is the goal of a well-functioning safety management system within a UAS company?
To ensure a company and all of its employees are able to plan for , prevent, react, and recover from an unmanned incident or accident.
To ensure a company and all of its employees never cause an unmanned incident or accident.
To ensure a company and all of its employees follow UAS regulations.
13
UAS technology has created a new and amazing field of study with the potential of saving lives, resources, time, and money. Benefits of utilizing an unmanned aircraft system instead of a traditional manned aircraft system include:
Extreme Endurance
UAS can fly at low speeds and altitudes
UAS are lightweight and can be launched from remote or unimproved locations
