What About Solving Inequalities?

  •  7>37>3  Is true, so let's see what happens when we manipulate it.

  •  (7)+2>(3)+2\left(7\right)+2>\left(3\right)+2

  •             9>59>5

  • Adding a positive number to both sides doesn't have an affect on the inequality symbol.

  •  (7)+2 > (3)+2\left(7\right)+-2\ >\ \left(3\right)+-2

  •                 5 >15\ >1

  • Adding a negative number to both sides doesn't have an affect on the inequality symbol.

3

What About Solving Inequalities?

  •  7>37>3  Is true, so let's see what happens when we manipulate it.

  •  (7)(2)>(3)(2)\left(7\right)\left(2\right)>\left(3\right)\left(2\right)

  •          14>614>6

  • Multiplying both sides by a positive doesn't have an effect on the inequality symbol.

  •  (7)2>(3)2\frac{\left(7\right)}{2}>\frac{\left(3\right)}{2}

  •  2.5>1.52.5>1.5

  • Dividing both sides by a positive doesn't have an effect on the inequality symbol.

What About Solving Inequalities?

  •  7>37>3  Is true, so let's see what happens when we manipulate it.

  •  (7)(2)>(3)(2)\left(7\right)\left(-2\right)>\left(3\right)\left(-2\right)

  •          14>6  IS NOT TRUE....-14>-6\ \ IS\ NOT\ TRUE....   14 <6   But if you flip the inequality, its true.-14\ <-6\ \ \ But\ if\ you\ flip\ the\ inequality,\ it's\ true.

  •  (7)2>(3)2\frac{\left(7\right)}{-2}>\frac{\left(3\right)}{-2}

  •  2.5>1.5 IS NOT TRUE-2.5>-1.5\ IS\ NOT\ TRUE

  •  2.5 <1.5   But if you flip the inequality, its true.-2.5\ <-1.5\ \ \ But\ if\ you\ flip\ the\ inequality,\ it's\ true.

  • Multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number reverses the inequality symbol.

12

Solving an Inequality with a Positive Coefficient

  • The steps stay the same as when solving an equation

  • Since no side was multiplied or divided by a negative, the symbol stays the same.

13

Solving an Inequality with a Negative Coefficient

  • The steps stay the same as when solving an equation

  • However, notice that at the step when they divided both sides by -3, the inequality symbol had to reverse to the opposite one
