[The Three Gorges Project is a hard engineering measure which aims to reduce flooding in the lower course of Changjiang. A huge dam is built in the upper and middle course of the river and a huge reservoir is formed behind it.

There are several benefits brought by the project, e.g. generate HEP, attract tourism.]

[The Three Gorges Project has improved the navigation along Changjiang. Large ships and vessels can now travel from the middle course to upper course of the river]

[However, the reservoir behind the dam traps sediments and prevents them from moving downstream, hence, the soil fertility at the lower course reduces. The construction of the dam has also brought many negative environmental and social impacts.]

[return farmland to lake 退耕還湖 is a soft strategy used along Changjiang, China]

[The aim of the strategy is to resume the size of lakes along the river. It is because when river enters a lake, velocity will reduce and deposition of loads will take place. Thus, the amount of loads that will be transported downstream can be reduced. This reduces the problem of silting in the lower course of river and reduces chances of floods.]

[If water in the channel is diverted, meaning the discharge and energy will reduce. This cannot help to reduce silting.]

[straighten the channel can increase velocity and energy of river.]

[returning farmland to woodland means there will be more trees which can hold soil together. Woodland also encourages more infiltration and reduces surface runoff, thus less silting in the river]

[Because of rapid development in China, a lot of lakes along Changjiang are reclaimed to provide more land for development. Thus, size of lakes reduces. (1) Some of these land are used for farming. So the area of farmland has increased. (4)]

[However, more trees are cut (2) to provide land for development. Deforestation is significant. Without trees to hold soil together, soil becomes loose and is washed into river easily through surface runoff. Hence, the amount of sediments in the river increases. (3)]

2015 DSE Q2b(iii)

The downstream of site 4 is favourable for the formation of depositional features because

  1. the relief / gradient has become gentler. As shown on the map, the contour lines have become more widely spaced. With a gentle relief, the channel can swing more freely.

  2. At the inner banks, river flow slower which favours deposition to take place. While at the outer banks, river flow faster favouring lateral erosion, Thus, as we can see from the map, meanders are formed..

  3. There are also more tributaries joining the main river at the downstream of site 4, e.g. at site 7. These tributaries increase the amount of loads in the river.
