INTRODUCTION

The first roads were bumpy, twisting, narrow, muddy tracks used by people and their herds of animals.

About 2000 years ago The Romans built straight roads in Europe and North Africa so that soldiers could march easily from one part of the Roman empire to another. Romans roads were paved with stones and had a sloping surface to allow rainwater to drain away.
