What could be more fun than pedaling a bike? Did you know that the first bicycles had no pedals? There were also no brakes! How do you suppose they stopped? Later, during the mid-1800s, bikes were built with pedals. One type of bike had a gigantic wheel at the front and one small wheel at the back. The rider sat on a seat above the front tire.

Roads today are smooth. In the past, roads were bumpy because they were made of stone, brick, or dirt. One early bicycle was called the bone shaker. It had a heavy frame and hard, wooden wheels. Imagine riding a bike with wooden wheels on a bumpy road. No wonder they called it the bone shaker!
