Who Makes Things?

by John Dennis

Slide image

2

A factory is a building where they make things.

Where who makes things?

Let's ask the men who come out of a car factory. Maybe we can find out.

Here comes a man. "Can you make a car?"

"No."

Here comes another man. "Can you make a car?"

"No."

Here comes a third man. "Can you make a car?

"No."

3

No one who works in the car factory says that he can make a car. Why not?

Today in car factories, and many other factories, each worker has his own special job. He doesn't know how to do all the things that must be done to build a car. But he's good at his own job.

It would take a long time to teach a man everything he'd have to know to build a car. But when a man has just one special thing to do, he can learn his job quickly and well. Then lots of men working together can make a car.

Each worker in this car factory is part of an assembly line. This is a line of workers and machines putting the parts of something together.

4

The different parts that go into a car are made at other factories. Then they are sent to the car factory.

The inside frame of the car starts moving down the assembly line. It moves on a conveyor. A conveyor is a big belt or chain. It moves things along.

As the frame moves along on the conveyor, each worker is ready to put his part into place. The parts come to the workers on other conveyors. They get to the right worker at just the right time.

Some large parts, such as the outside bodies of the cars, come on an overhead conveyor. The worker who puts these parts where they belong pushes a button. This moves the car body down into place.

5

Soon the car comes to the end of the assembly line. The last part is put into place. The car is finished. Now fuel and oil are put into it. A worker drives it away.

Each man at the car factory has done his own special job. The men can put a whole car together in less than two hours.

There's just one trouble. A worker can get bored doing the same thing again and again and again.

And no one can ever go home thinking, What a fine car I made today!

Would you like that? What do you think?
