It was a hot, sticky morning Grandpa Peters sat rocking on his front porch. "What weather he groaned. "It's going to be ninety-five today."

Just then Sid Jones came walking by. He lived down the street. And he was on stilts Grandpa thought it was too hot for walking on stilts. So he called out, "Going to be ninety-five today. Sid!"

"Is that so?" said Sid And he walked on by.

Grandpa shook his head. "I guess boys just don't feel the heat."

Soon Pam Pike came by. She was skipping It made grand pa perspire just to watch her. So he called out, "Going to be ninety-five today, Pam!"

"My goodness!" said Pam. And she skipped away Grandpa pulled himself up from the rocker. "I just can't stand to watch these children play," he groaned. "It makes me feel too hot."

Then he opened the door and went inside his house. He lay down on the sofa. Soon he was snoring like a buzz saw.

In about an hour grandpa woke up. He heard a knock on the door. He went to look out. There on the porch were lots of children and their mothers. The group included Sid Jones and Pam Pike.

"Come on out, Grandpa Peters," called Pam "We have a big surprise for you!"

4

Grandpa stepped outside. And he couldn't believe his eyes. On his lawn was a long table. At one end there was a round pitcher of lemonade. At the other end there was a square pitcher of orangeade. And in the middle there was a cake!

"Happy birthday, grandpa!" cried the visitors "We hear you're ninety five today!"

"What's that?" grandpa said. "Who says I'm ninety-five? I'm eighty. And this isn't my birthday. My birthday is in March!"

"But you told us yourself that you were going to be ninety five today!" said Sid Jones.

5

The old man looked puzzled. Then he began to laugh. "Oh my," he said. "I was talking about the hot weather. That's what was going to be ninety-five. Not me!"

For a moment everyone stood still with surprise. Then they began to laugh too. "Well," said one mother, "what's wrong with having grandpa's ninety-fifth birthday party fifteen years ahead of time?"

"Nothing," squealed all the children.

Later, as grandpa took a bite of his cake, he said. "There's nothing like a nice party to help you forget the hot weather."
