A letter is ONE NUMBER

A letter represents one number in an expression. That number was 3 in our first square and 23 in our second square.

When that number replaces the letter, the expression can be evaluated to one number.

Understand that a letter represents ONE NUMBER. 9 is an example of one number, but also is 529. (even though 529 has 3 digits, it is still ONE number)
