The War in the South and West
The British were losing in the North
They decided to change that strategy and invade the South
The British believed that with so many Loyalists( people who still called the King their ruler) it would be much easier to win.
At first the stategy was working
They had taken control of Georgia and South Carolina after winning numerous battles.
They even had the help of loyalists.
Also, Benedict Arnold, a great American hero, decided to change sides and fight with the British. He has and always will be remembered as a traitor.

Patriot Successes
With the British winning so many battles in the South, the patriots needed a strategy as well
They began using sneak attacks- Small groups would ambush the British then quickly retreat.
Francis Marion would attack then quickly retreat into the swamps. Marion earned the nickname "swamp fox"
Nathaniel Greene formulated a plan to wear out the British.
His small army would locate the British army, shoot, and retreat forcing the British to chase them.
A small army can move much faster than the very large British Army. The British could never destroy his army

A treaty is an organized, official, ending to a war.
The Treaty of Paris gave America independence from Britain and the King. It also gave them land all the way to the Mississippi and down to Florida.
The new country still faced many challenges. The first being slavery.
How could the land of the free still have slaves? Many states and courts, especially in the North gave freedom to those slaves.
The other challenge was what form of government to use to replace a king.
