OBJECTIVE: Describes the set of integers and identify real-life situations that make use of it. 

Integers are composed of positive and negative counting numbers and zero.

Before we go to the concept of integers, let us know first the concept of opposites. The concept of opposites is commonly demonstrated in real life.

• Bank deposits and withdrawals

• the rise and fall in temperature

• gain and loss in business

•  increase and decrease in profit

• right and wrong answers,

• the use of positive and negative integers.

Example

• a profit of Php 50.00 +50 / a loss of Php 15.00 -15

• moving 5 steps forward +5 / moving 3 steps backward -3 

• 6 hours overtime +6 / 4 hours undertime -4

•  a deposit of Php 10 000.00 +10 000 / a withdrawal of Php 5 000.00 -5 000

Example

A messenger forgot on what floor in a building he would deliver his package. With no one to ask for directions, he rode the elevator up to the 10th floor. Then, he went down 5 floors and went up again 4 floors. Still, he could not find the right floor. So, he went up again 6 floors, then down again 3 floors and decided to stop for a while. On what floor did the messenger stop?
