Ivar’s forces landed in the kingdom of East Anglia, where they met little resistance, and moved on to Northumbria, where they captured the capital city of York in 866. Aella and Osbert, the Northumbrian king whom Aella had deposed, were not captured then, but, in a second battle, in March 867, both were killed. According to some accounts, the vengeful Vikings subjected Aella to a particularly gruesome torture-execution.
