Zoom in on an Excerpt:
Now that you have watched the clip and thought about the main ideas and techniques used, you are going to focus on an excerpt of the transcript from the clip in order to see how the techniques filmmakers use add to the ideas and information found in a transcript of the video. Remember the definition you found of the word, transcript, in the opening activity (the written words said in a video or speech).
7
Multiple Choice
Read the transcript: Looking out over the vast expanse of clear, sparkling water, there is no plastic in sight. (indistinct chatter) The contents of the trawl are emptied and floated. The tiny pieces of plastic then reveal themselves to Jo and Dr. Neal.
How do the techniques in the video add to the meaning of the transcript and help develop
ideas?
By filming and interviewing people close to the garbage patch. This technique helps us show the idea that people should do something about the trash in the ocean.
The techniques do not add meaning to the transcript
At first, the image shows, no plastic is visible. But then, as the narrator discuss the “contents of the trawl,” the camera reveals images of the tiny plastic. These techniques help show the idea that plastic isn’t always visible in the ocean but exists in vast amounts.
