A discount is a decrease in the original price of an item. Some important terms to remember are:

• Original price - the price BEFORE discount, the full price.

• Discount - the dollar amount you save.

• Sales price - the price after discount.

Markups, sales tax, and tips

• A markup is a percent of cost that businesses add to make a profit.

• A sales-tax is a percent of cost that government add to generate revenue to operate.

• A tip is a percent of cost that customers add to compensate servers.

We can use a percent proportion to find the markup, sales tax or discount and add to find total cost.
