A Dramatic Philippine Dance

Singkil is a Muslim royal dance from Lanao. It is a dance Filipinos are proud of. The costumes are colorful. The movements are graceful. Singkil got its name from the anklets or bracelets with tinkling bells worn around the ankles of the female dancers.

Singkil is dramatic from the start to the end. The gongs announce the appearance of the princess. She appears sitting on two long bamboo poles. These poles are borne on the shoulders of the male dancers. The female dancers continue waving their fans and keeping time to the beating of the gongs.

3

The princess steps down. She summons her attendant by stamping her right foot with anklets of tiny tinkling bells. A maid-in waiting comes forward carrying a beautifully decorated umbrella. She follows the princess wherever she goes. She holds the umbrella over her head. Six dancers clap the bamboo poles to the rhythm of the gongs. The princess steps in and out of crisscrossing bamboos clapped together to the rhythm of gongs by six males. The princess weaves in and out of the clapping bamboos. While doing so, she expertly waves two jeweled fans called apir.

4

The princess is a proud lady. Her head is always up in the air. She wears a serious frown on her face. As one watches the dance he or she will be reminded of a beautiful Maranao legend. The legend tells that there was a princess named Gandingan. She was fond of strolling in the woods. This forest was inhabited by mischievous fairies. They had been watching the princess stroll in the woods.

One day, the fairies played a trick on her. As the princess was strolling, they made the ground beneath her feet quake. The quaking of the earth made the stones roll and knock against one another. At times, the earth quaked fast. At times it quaked at a slower pace. But the brave princess was not afraid. So that her feet wouldn't get hurt by the rolling stones, she skipped nimbly from one place to another. She tried to avoid the stones until she was able to get out of the woods unhurt.
