At the end of this topic you will:

Use the structure of the first conditional (if...will...) through a couple of sentences in order to refer to real situations which will present a consequence in the future.

First Conditional

• Now let's talk about the first conditional. If A happens, B will happen.

• To make a future real conditional, use will in the result clause.

• For example: "If I save enough money, I will buy a new cellphone".

• Another example: "If I don't study for the exam, I won't pass the admission test".

• Use the first conditional to talk about possible situations in the future.

Let's analyze the following sentence

If I study hard, I will pass the exam

If I study hard, I will pass the exam.

• Do I have the possibility of studying hard? Yes, I do.

• Is it possible to study hard? Yes, it is.

• Is it sure that if I study hard and I will pass the exam? No, but it is very probably.

• The result or consequence expressed in the first conditional is very probably to happen when the condition is satisfied.

Order of Sentences

• The common order of the sentences is:

  If I study hard, I will pass the test.

• But we can change the order of the sentences and the meaning is the same.

  I will pass the test if I study hard.

The different uses for First Conditional

• The first conditional is commonly used when we want to talk about:

• Possible Plans or Predictions (If I finish the school project, I will go to the party with my friends).

• Promises (If you get a 10 in the exam, I will buy you a new cellphone).

• Warnings (If you hit my brother again, I will crush you!)

• Threats (If you don't clean your room, I will punish you all the weekend).

• Persuasions (If you help me with the Maths exam, I will help you with the Language homework).

Follow the pattern:

If I feel bored this weekend...

p.e.

If I feel bored this weekend, I will hang out with my best friend.

I will learn how to cook a pizza if I feel bored this weekend.

What will you do if your teacher says that you won't have class?

Follow the pattern:

If the teacher says that there's no class...

p.e.

If the teacher says that there's no class, I will go to eat something.

I will take a nap if the teacher says that there's no class.

What will you do if you receive a message from your crush?

Follow the pattern:

If I receive a message from my crush...

p.e.

If I receive a message from my crush, I will be happy.

I won't believe it if my crush texts me.

Follow the pattern:

If I cannot sleep tonight...

p.e.

If I cannot sleep tonight, I will watch a movie on Disney+.

I will do exercise if I cannot sleep tonight.

Follow the pattern:

If my ex calls me...

p.e.

If my ex calls me, I won't attend the call.

I will answer if my ex calls me.
