Antacid = Anti acid

• Problem = too much stomach acid

• Solution = add a base (antacid)

• need an acid-base reaction

• Bases react with acids to diminish, or neutralize their properties.

Types of reactions

• decomposition - a compound breaks down into simpler substances

• single-displacement - one element takes the place of another in a compound

• double-displacement - the positive portions of two ionic compounds are interchanged

• combustion - a substance rapidly combines with oxygen to form one or more oxides

Types of Acid-Base Reactions

• neutralization - properties of both the acid and base are neutralized when they react.

• most cases: water & salt are result of acid/base reaction

• Salt = general term used to describe the ionic compound formed from the negative part of the acid and positive part of the base.
