  •   Verbs are the action words in a sentence that describe what the subject is doing. Verbs are the main part of a sentence or phrase, telling a story about what is taking place. In fact, without a verb, full thoughts can’t be properly conveyed, and even the simplest sentences

A. Action verbs

  • Action verbs, also called dynamic verbs, express an action whether it be physical or mental. An action verb explains what the subject of the sentence is doing or has done. Looking at action verb examples helps make it clear the function of action verbs in sentences and what purpose they serve.

  • Example : listen, make, visit, wait, cry, dance, fall,...

B. Linking verbs

  • Linking verbs are verbs that serve as a connection between a subject and further information about that subject. They do not show any action; rather, they “link” the subject with the rest of the sentence. The verb to be is the most common linking verb, but there are many others, including all the sense verbs.

  • Example : am, is, are, was, were, become, feel, will be, ....

C. Helping verbs

  • Helping verbs are verbs that help the main verb in a sentence by extending its meaning. They can also add detail to how time is conveyed in a sentence. As a result, helping verbs are used to create the most complicated verb tenses in English: the progressive and the perfect aspects.

  • Example : has, have, had, having, will have, does, do, did, will do.
