Direct Object Pronouns
A direct object in a sentence is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb. We often need to replace the direct object with a pronoun. A direct object pronoun replaces the direct object (person or thing).
For example:
I send the letters. (the letters - direct object, since it the thing receiving the action of sending in the sentence.)
I send them. (them - direct object pronoun. Them refers to the letters. It is replacing the noun, letters.)

Pronombres de Objeto Directo
Direct object pronouns in Spanish agree in number and gender with the nouns they replace. In the following example, cartas is a feminine, plural noun so the feminine plural direct object pronoun las is used to replace it in the second sentence:
Yo mando las cartas. (las cartas - direct object)
Yo las mando. (las - direct object pronoun)
Placement: You may have noticed that the direct object in English goes after the verb while in Spanish it comes before. There are two places where direct object pronouns can be placed. First, before a conjugated verb like in the example above.
