I can use a visual model and decimal notation to represent fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals in tenths.

The diagram shows the heights of a plant at the end of each of 3 weeks. After Week 1, the plant is 3/10​ meter tall. Another way to represent the height is 0.3 meter. Both 3/10​​ and 0.3 can be read as three tenths. They represent 3 parts of 10 equal parts of a whole.

• The information that is given in the problem shows that another way to represent the height 3/10 meter is 0.3 meter. I used this information to represent 5/10​​ meter also as 0.5 meter. I used this information to represent 7/10​​ meter also as 0.7 meter.

A tenth is one of ten equal sized parts. 

A decimal point is a dot that separates the ones place from the tenths place in a number. 

A decimal is a number that has one or more digits to the right of a decimal point.

Each whole tenths model represents 1 whole. There are 2 whole tenths models that are shaded. The tenths model is a whole that is divided into 10 equal parts. Each equal part represents one tenth of a whole. There are 8 tenths of a whole that are shaded in the last model.

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number is a whole number, and a proper fraction represented together.

How did we get this answer?

A mixed number shows a whole part and a fraction part. Tina uses 2 whole cups. Write 2 as the whole part. Tina uses eight tenths of a cup. Write ​8/10 as the fraction part. The amount of water that Tina uses written as a mixed number is  2 and 8/10​.
