The Painting
British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner painted landscapes and seascapes, and that his style becoming increasingly abstract over the years. This painting from 1842 depicts a paddle-wheel steamboat during a storm.
Turner made this painting before the invention of photography. He painted using his memory and his imagination. The full title of this painting is: Snow Storm – Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth Making Signals in Shallow Water, and going by the Lead. The Author was in this Storm on the Night the “Ariel” left Harwich.
