Passive Transport: Osmosis
2
Passive Transport:
is the movement of substances from high to low
is does NOT require energy
3
Osmosis is:
a form of diffusion
it is ONLY for WATER!!!!
it is the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane from high to low
water uses a special channel called an aquaporin
4
Water wants to:
move from high concentration to low concentration
move towards the solute (salt, sugar)
5
When water moves into a cell:
it is called hypotonic
cells will swell and sometimes burst (lysis)
it gives plants turgor
6
When water moves out of a cell:
it is called hypertonic
cells will shrink and shrivel up
7
When water moves in and out of the cell at the same rate
it is called isotonic
animal cells are happiest in an isotonic solution!
8
Multiple Choice
