Similes vs. Metaphors

Simile: a comparison between two things (using like and as)

My life is like a rollercoaster.

Metaphor: a comparison between two things (not using like or as)

My life is a rollercoaster.

Here, life and rollercoaster are being compared to show that life has its ups and downs. The only difference is the use of "like" that makes one a simile and the other a metaphor.

3

Personification

Personification is not a comparison.

It is when an object or part of nature is given human or animal-like characteristics.

The trees danced in the wind

Actual meaning: the trees were blowing in the wind.

The wind howled in the night.

Actual meaning: the wind blew so hard it made a loud noise (like a wolf)
