What we know

We have learned about Object Pronouns, including Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) and Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs). You may have guessed that in French, like in English, more than one pronoun can be used in a sentence. When we use two object pronouns in a sentence, we must follow the rules for Double Object Pronouns! Now let's have some pie!

3

Pronoun Pie

  • The pronoun pie includes all of the pronouns we have learned about.

  • It tells us which order to place pronouns in a sentence when there are more than one.

Where does the pronoun go?

  • Pronouns go BEFORE the verb

  • In a sentence with 1 verb, it goes before the verb

  • In the passé composé, it goes before the whole verb (aux + pp)

  • In a sentence with 2 verbs (one in the infinitive), it generally goes before the second verb.

5

Where does the pronoun go?

  • In a negative sentence, remember the negative burger! The pronouns stick to the verb, inside the ne...pas

  • In an inverted question, the pronouns still go before the verb, but the subject is after the verb: Me le donnes-tu? (are you giving it to me?)

  • In a command...

6

Double Pronouns with commands

  • The verb comes first

  • The order is slightly different

  • The pronouns are hyphenated

  • Example: Dis-le-moi! = Tell me!
