Traditional septic tanks

Traditional septic tanks

The septic tank has been used in one form or another for at least 3000 years.

In New Zealand the traditional septic tank has received the solid and liquid waste from

toilets, baths, showers and sinks (combined black water and grey water). The tank

processes that and eventually discharges effluent (liquid) to either a soak-hole, or a piped

system buried in a gravel trench, from where it soaks into the ground water.

The following diagram gives an overall view of the septic tank and its piped trench system

disposal field.
