Verbs Review Questions

  • What is the difference between a transitive verb and an intransitive verb?

  • How do you tell the difference between a helping/auxiliary verb and a linking verb?

3

Transitive and Intransitive

  • Transitive verbs are action verbs that have direct objects.

  • What is a direct object?

  • Intransitive verbs are action verbs that DO NOT have direct objects.

  • How do you tell the difference between a transitive an intransitive verb?

4

Helping and Linking Verbs

  • Helping/Auxiliary verbs HELP other verbs in the sentence.

  • You have to look at the entire sentence if there might be a helping verb.

  • Linking Verbs are verbs that LINK the subject to the rest of the sentence.

  • To be (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been) is one of the most common linking verbs

  • BUT be careful! The forms of TO BE can also be helping verbs so you have to look out.

  • What is a good way to tell the difference between the two?
