2

Inverse Operations

  • The inverse operation means to complete the OPPOSITE operation

  • Addition = Subtraction

  • Subtraction = Addition

3

Isolating the Variable

  • The goal of finding the value of the variable in an equation is to ISOLATE the variable.

  • In order to isolate the variable, we must complete the inverse operation

  • When we are using the inverse operation, we must balance the equation (whatever we do to one side of the equal sign, we must do to the other)

4

One-Step Equation Checklist

  • 1. Read the equation

  • 2. Determine the inverse operation needed to ISOLATE the variable

  • 3. BALANCE the equation, by completing the inverse operation (Draw a line through the equal sign)

  • 4. Find the value of the variable

  • 5. Check your work by plugging in the value of the variable to the equation
